What does Chemical Management mean?
In simple terms, chemical management involves the safe and systematic handling of chemicals throughout their entire lifecycle. From receiving and using them to storing, transporting, and eventually disposing of them. It plays a crucial role in workplace safety, aiming to protect people, the environment and property.
Chemical management includes the following areas:
- Purchasing and receiving: Ensuring that the right products are purchased and that safety data sheets and product labels are accurate and up to date.
- Storage: Storing chemicals safely, for example by using a chemical storage cabinet when handling flammable substances.
- Use: Making sure that the correct protective equipment is used, such as gloves and goggles, and following up to ensure that safety procedures are being followed.
- Waste management: Handling hazardous waste properly and sending it to the appropriate authorized recipient for safe disposal.
- Documentation: Keeping an updated register of all chemicals on site, including current safety data sheets and risk assessments.
- Training: Educating employees who work with chemicals to make them aware of potential risks and how to respond in the event of spills or accidents.
