REACH Regulation

What is the REACH Regulation?

The REACH Regulation, (EC) No 1907/2006, is an EU regulation that entered into force on 1 June 2007. The main objective of the legislation is to protect human health and the environment from risks associated with chemicals and to transfer the responsibility for risk assessment to manufacturers, importers, and companies that place chemical products on the market. The REACH Regulation affects a large number of companies across many different sectors, including those that may not consider themselves to be working with chemicals.

REACH includes, among other things, requirements for the registration of chemical substances. Those who manufacture or import a substance must identify the risks associated with it and register it if it is manufactured or imported in quantities of more than one tonne per year. If a substance is not registered, it cannot be placed on the market. Registration is carried out with ECHA, the European Chemicals Agency.

ECHA may ban hazardous substances if the risks are considered unmanageable
