Hazard Pictograms (Hazard Symbols)

What is a Hazard Pictogram?

Hazard pictograms, or hazard symbols, are used to indicate how a chemical product is dangerous. In other words, a hazard pictogram is a type of warning symbol designed to alert the user to the potential hazards associated with the product.

There are nine different symbols, divided into three main categories: physical hazards, health hazards, and environmental hazards. These symbols show in what way a chemical product may be hazardous. A chemical product can display several hazard symbols at the same time, depending on how it is classified.

Labeling of Chemical Products Following the CLP Regulation Hazard Symbols

Accompanying texts

In hazard labelling – that is, the labelling required for a chemical product depending on its classification – there are, in addition to the hazard pictograms, also texts that may include information on how to protect yourself, what to do in case of an accident, and how to properly dispose of leftover product.

Rules regarding Hazard Pictograms

In hazard labelling – meaning the labelling a chemical product must have depending on its classification – there are, besides the hazard pictograms, also texts that may contain instructions on protection, first aid in case of accidents, and waste management for remaining product.

The rules concerning hazard pictograms and labelling are set out in Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council on classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures, commonly referred to as the CLP Regulation.
