What is the Product Register?
The Product Register is a database where chemical products and biotechnological organisms within the EU must be registered. The database contains information about the composition, intended use, and function of the products.
Who must register their products in the Product Register?
Business registration in the Product Register
Any company established within the EU that manufactures or imports chemical products listed under the relevant customs tariff codes (in accordance with EU regulations on the classification, labelling, and packaging of substances and mixtures – CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, and the REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006) must register its activities in the Product Register. The registration must be completed no later than when the business begins operations.
The registration is submitted electronically through the designated EU or national authority’s online portal.
Product registration in the Product Register
Companies that manufacture or import more than 100 kg of a chemical product per year must also submit a product notification. This notification must include the product name, annual quantity, composition details, function, and intended use. The report must be submitted annually, no later than 28 February, covering the quantities from the previous calendar year.
If the product is a biocidal product, an application for approval under the EU Biocidal Products Regulation (Regulation (EU) No 528/2012) must be submitted and approved before the product can be sold or used.
For more information about products subject to notification, visit the website of the relevant EU or national chemicals authority.
Why do we have a Product Register in the EU?
The Product Register serves as an important tool for protecting human health and the environment. The information collected is used to prevent and reduce risks associated with chemicals. Regulatory authorities also use the Product Register for inspections, enforcement, and for the development of new rules and legislation.
