Risk Assessment

What is a Risk Assessment?

To understand risk assessments, we first need to understand what defines a “risk.” It refers to the probability of illnesses or accidents occurring and the consequences that follow. The level of risk often depends on how work is organized, together with human and technical factors. Conducting risk assessments is about staying one step ahead, a way to prevent accidents before they happen.

A risk assessment in connection with handling chemicals provides knowledge about the hazards associated with the work and how to protect oneself against them. A risk assessment is essential for a safe work environment, as it helps reduce the risk of exposure that can cause serious health problems and helps prevent accidents, illnesses, production losses, and material damage. Therefore, regular and systematic assessments are necessary to protect both people and the organization.

In addition to being an important tool in daily operations, risk assessments are also a key component of systematic work environment management. A well-conducted risk assessment demonstrates that an employer takes employee safety seriously and cares about the long-term sustainability of the organization. It is also equally important to have a risk assessment available when authorities conduct inspections. It must be possible to present current and documented risk assessments. This serves as concrete proof that the requirements of the Work Environment Act are being met and that the company works systematically to reduce risks.
